Project meeting and Knowledge Exchange visit exploring BASE: The Power of "Buddies"
In November 2025, the exchange continued in Drenthe to look at BASE, an inspiring mentor-buddy system originally designed to help seniors stay active and combat loneliness. Through BASE, professional mentors train volunteer "buddies" to accompany people on walks or to local sports groups, blending physical movement with vital social connection.
Observations
- Peer-to-Peer Support: The program highlights that people are far more likely to stay active when they have a trusted peer cheering them on and joining them.
- Adaptable for Kids: While BASE started with older adults, its core method—focusing on active lifestyles, safe neighborhoods, and physical and mental well-being—shows huge potential for supporting primary school children.
- BeweegStart Initiative: The hosts also showcased "BeweegStart," a program focusing on infants and toddlers. It provides universal digital memberships, local neighborhood activities, and in-home support for vulnerable families to ensure kids get an active start in life.
Summary
Whether helping seniors or toddlers, structured, peer-led support systems are incredibly effective at creating lasting, healthy habits.
